What if the place was here, what if the time was today?
What would you think of him, what would you think of the way
he spoke of love and peace and brotherhood among men?
You’d go and call him freak and things they called him back then.
What if the time was now, what if the place was right here?
It would be hard for him to find a receptive ear.
He’d have to break the law to get across what he said.
You’d want him put away. You’d want him ending up dead.
If it was here and now, he might be making the news.
He’d be the one you’d hate, he’d be the one you’d accuse
of being crazy and unpatriotic and free
and you’d see how he looked and that would be all you’d see.
But, you still go to church and kneel or pray when you’re told.
You mumble empty words, thinking you’re saving your soul.
You try to buy a piece of heaven for when you die,
without a single clue of what you’re doing or why.
