Seems the rain has to be somebody’s tears,
‘cause there’s someone who’s dying.
It’s a boy who has so very few years
and it’s his mother who’s crying.
Sure it’s easy to wipe the tears from her face,
but it’s hard to find someone else to take his place.
It’s a crime to create another empty space
and make one more person cry.
Try to make little children understand
they’ve no longer a father.
You give them a medal for this dead man.
Why the hell do you bother?
No reward that you give to them will bring him back.
Why must you always seem to have the sickening knack
of finding the strength in others that you lack
and of making people cry?
You say freedom’s what you were thinking of
when you murdered her lover.
She recalls when they were free to make love
and they could hold each other.
Where’s the freedom now that he’s beneath the ground?
Try to tell her it’s because he’s been shot down
that she’s freer to enjoy what she has found
and make one more person cry.
